What is a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), or a Chiropractor?

If you've been in an auto accident or suffered from a sports injury or other type of personal injury, you may be wondering why many doctors and injury treatment being recommended  are Chiropractors. So what is a Chiropractor and what does chiropractic care entail?

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, and the effects of these disorders on general health.  Chiropractic services are most often used to treat musculoskeletal complaints including, but not limited to, neck pain, back pain, headaches and pain in the joints of the arms or legs.  Chiropractic is the third largest primary health care profession, surpassed in number only by doctors of medicine and dentistry.  It is estimated doctors of chiropractic (DC’s) treat about 35 million Americans annually.  Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints.

What is a Doctor of Chiropractic?

Doctors like Dr. Chris are Doctors of Chiropractic (DC’s), often referred to as chiropractors and chiropractic physicians, who practice a hands on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment.  Chiropractors have extensive diagnostic skills and are trained to perform therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises as well as to provide lifestyle, dietary and nutritional counseling.

Chiropractors may assess patients through clinical examination and diagnostic testing to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate.  Chiropractors will refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care isn’t suitable for the patient’s condition or the condition requires co-management in conjunction with other health care providers.

Like their medical colleagues, chiropractors are subject to the boundaries established in state practice acts and are regulated by state licensing boards. Their education in four year doctoral graduate school programs is nationally accredited through an agency that operates under the support of the US Department of Education.  After graduation, chiropractors must pass national board exams before obtaining a license to practice and must maintain their license by earning continuing education (CE) credits through state approved CE programs.
